Candle Care

Small steps. Clean burn. Longer life.

FUMO wood wick close-up in cream-colored candle wax

Your First Burn

Let the wax melt to the edges of the vessel. This takes 2 to 3 hours.

A full melt pool on the first burn sets the pattern for every burn after. Skip this step and the wax tunnels down the center. One patient session prevents it.

Trimming Your Wood Wick

Trim to 3 to 4mm before every light. Pinch away the charred wood from the last burn. Short enough that the flame stays low and steady.

Wood wicks split as they burn. That is what creates the crackle. A clean trim exposes fresh grain and gives you a reliable light.

Burn Time

2 to 4 hours per session. Never longer than 4. Let the wax solidify completely before relighting.

Long burns overheat the vessel and flatten the fragrance. Short, consistent sessions give you better scent and a longer life.

Troubleshooting

Flame is too high
Trim the wick shorter. If the flame stays tall, check for drafts. Move the candle somewhere still.
Tunneling
Extend the next burn to 3 to 4 hours. Let the melt pool reach the edges. If tunneling has already set in, a longer burn can correct it.
Wick won't stay lit
Trim the wick to expose fresh wood. Remove charred pieces from the top. The flame needs clean grain to catch.
Soot or smoking
The wick is too long, or the candle is near a draft. Extinguish. Let it cool. Trim to 3 to 4mm and move it somewhere still.
Weak scent throw
Wait for a full melt pool before judging the scent. A partial pool holds back the fragrance. Also consider the room. One candle fills a bedroom. Not an open floor plan.

When to Stop Burning

Stop when the wick clip is visible or about 1cm of wax remains. Past this point, the base of the vessel can overheat.
